The Islands and Istanbul finally gets a city museum. The museum's general approach, materials intended for collection and the location of the museum that will tell the social history of Istanbul islands are now embracing local islanders from 8 August on through an introductory exhibition called Towards the Islands Museum.

Short surveys will be conducted with visitors too during the exhibition from 8 August to 12 September in Büyükada Port Square. Islands local people will be requested to support the project by donating documents and objects in order to be used in temporary and permanent exhibitions of the museum that is being prepared under the slogans: "This is our story" and "Don't let memories vanish but be shared and inherited to the future".

The Islands Museum Project carried out as an important project within Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture by joint efforts from Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Municipality of Islands, Islands County Administration and Foundation of Islands and; presentations will also take place in port Squares of Heybeliada, Burgazada and K?nal?ada in order to publicize the exhibition to occur in Büyükada as the first important step of the museum project.

The exhibition to be opened under the title "Towards the Islands Museum" bear the signatures of Sad?k Karamustafa and Ay?e Karamustafa. Content work of the exhibition was realized by precious contributions of Art Historian Asst.Prof. Eva ?arlak along with Islands Museum Curatorial Board.
The museum is planned to locate at the previous Büyükada Primary School (Büyükada Ilkokulu) building which has a particular palace in memories of local islanders. Home to Sofronios the Patriarch of Alexandria this building was purchased by the Municipality and turned into a school in 1922. Although names changed ever in time this building served as a school until 1967.

Büyükada ?lkokulu will constitute the main building of the museum and it is also planned to extend the work throughout all the islands with additional facilities as Adaevi (Island House)founded approximately one year ago, Hüseyin Rahmi Gürp?nar House, ?nönü House, Naval High School Museum in Heybeliada and Sait Faik Museum in Burgazada and some other centers, libraries and various locations pertaining to non-governmental organizations.

Exhibition and activities for the Islands museum will be spread to many open or closed locations over the islands including seaports and squares.

How is the Islands Museum being founded?
Cultural activities, exhibitions, concerts and other content work conducted in Adaevi (The Island House) which opened last year just marked the coming footsteps of the Museum.

Architectural restoration of the building and museum planning were initiated in March 2009. The most crucial part of the Museum work is the collection campaign that will last not only by the foundation process but also along the years to come.
