Theatre Tulsa will kick off its 96th season in August with Oklahoma's first locally-produced version of "Newsies." Check out the cast singing a small selection of the show below!
Performance rights for "Newsies" became available in March of this year, and Theatre Tulsa was one of the first theatre companies in the county to book it for its upcoming season.
"Newsies" is a musical based on the 1992 Disney film, which was inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. The show features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein. "Newsies" made its Broadway debut in 2012, where it played for more than 1,000 performances. After closing on Broadway, the show toured throughout North America until 2016.
In its first year on Broadway, "Newsies" won Tony Awards for Best Choreography and Best Original Score, as well as Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Music.
"Theatre Tulsa audiences have come to expect big shows from us, and this is one of the biggest in the country today. This is a massive, dance-heavy show that will leave audiences astonished at the high level of local talent we have on stage," said Jarrod Kopp, Executive Director of Theatre Tulsa.
The cast stars Pete Brennan as Jack and Tabitha Littlefield as Katherine. Other featured actors include: Ben Rodriguez, Sam Briggs, Trace Herrera, Steven Osborn, Kolbi Jordan, Easton Edwards, Jacob Brockunier, Tyler McCoy, Jack Maricle, Celyn Griyson, Troy Cope, Audie Pritchett, Denver King, Steven Lambie, Caleb Stirewalt, Travis Guillory, Dan Ngyuen, Tee Brown, Kaley Durland, Robert Young, Kyle Gallien, Trevor Mastin, Stephen Hrhcir, Mason Combes, Andrea Avey, Bill Doolittle and Justin Tomlinson.
The ensemble features: Jen Alden, Kaylee Barnes, Karmen Blessing, Kaci Coldren, Andrea Collins, Alana Harris, Jennifer, Heisserer, Hannah Henderson, Marissa Hess, Jesamine Katzman, Brooke Lambie, Lenora Martin, Jess Miller, Erika Ralls, Laura Reeder, Kymber Sage, Kristen Simpson, Grace Stump, Gayle Wolfe, Becca Worthington, Gabrielle Young, Kolby Cardwell, Elijah Martin and Sam Robson.
The production is directed by Sara Phoenix, who is also Artistic Director of Theatre Tulsa.
Performances will be August 10-26 in the John H. Williams Theatre of the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. Evening showtimes on August 10-11, 17-18, 24-25 are at 8 p.m. Matinees on August 12, 19, 25 and 26 will be at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at myticketoffice.com or by calling 918-596-7111.
