Sankofa: The Soldier's Tale Retold reimagines Stravinsky's 1918 work, L'Histoire du Soldat, with a new libretto by poet Titilope Sonuga and direction by Tawiah M’Carthy. This world premiere features an award-winning cast, including Diego Matamoros as the Devil and Olaoluwa Fayokun as the Soldier, alongside a seven-piece ensemble from The Glenn Gould School. Set during WWI, the production explores the journey of a soldier from the historically Black No. 2 Construction Battalion, highlighting themes of resilience against racism and discrimination. The performance blends Sonuga's poetry with Stravinsky's music, honoring forgotten histories while paving the way for future narratives.
