Ariel Dorfman's political thriller Death and the Maiden is the dramatic exploration of a country's uneasy transition from dictatorship to democracy. This play raises the issue of torture and its implications, a subject which we here in Canada are currently examining. The play asks a universal question about humanity; how do we reach the truth when lying has become a habit.
