On the heels of the hit shows The Clergy Project and Newsgirl, SOULO Theatre presents a brand new site-specific pop-up run of Undercover Indian, written and performed by dynamic, artist-to-watch, Ankita Kumar-Ratta and co-created and directed by Tracey Erin Smith, Canada's Queen of Solo Shows, and the Artistic Director of SOULO Theatre (The Clergy Project, Newsgirl).
Undercover Indian takes place in a real yoga studio at Kula Annex Yoga (304 Brunswick Avenue, 2nd floor) for four shows only from November 4th - 11th, 2017.
In August 2017, Undercover Indian was invited to present at Canada's famous Soulpepper Theatre Company, as part of the Shen Development Series, during which it garnered great enthusiasm from its audience.
"A must see for anyone who has roots in more than one place, or anyone curious about what that experience is like! A touching, funny and deeply personal work from an amazing young creator." - RJ Satchithananthan (Musician and Educator)
In Undercover Indian, you are invited to join Ankita in a yoga class. In this hilariously thought-provoking, and playfully immersive theatre piece, Ankita reveals, asana by asana, how her experience in India made her see North American culture through a new lens. Undercover Indian is a story about belonging, becoming, and the beauty of identifying with two worlds.
Undercover Indian involves basic movement and participation, in the form of yoga asana (postures). The asana practice gives audiences the opportunity to physically experience the story, through a form that is caught between two worlds - the East and the West.
Undercover Indian involves basic movement and wearing comfortable clothing is encouraged.
However, chairs will be available in the space for those who do not wish to participate in the movement segments.
No yoga experience required.
