Theatrefront Presents MULES

Theatrefront announces the world premiere of MULES, from award-winning playwrightsBeth Graham and Daniela Vlaskalic (Drowning Girls), directed by Theatrefront artistic director Vikki Anderson, running February 15 - March 2, 2019 at Streetcar Crowsnest.

Beth Graham and Daniela Vlaskalic previously collaborated on the incredibly successfulDrowning Girls (with Charlie Tomlinson), a breathtaking social critique of love and married life. MULES is a scathing exploration of the desperation that emerges when people find themselves trapped and powerless with no clear way out.

Best friends in high school, Cindy and Crystal haven't see each other in ten years. They reunite through social media, only to find they are both miserable and desperate to move up in the world. Holed up in the airport arrivals washroom, Crystal with a belly full of cocaine from Colombia and Cindy fearful of her violent boyfriend, the action unfolds in one single night, but changes their lives forever.

A dark comedy about poverty, friendship ... and drug smuggling, MULES is a tragic journey for the two women, as well as the airport janitor, who discovers them mid-plan only to escalate the crisis.

Beth Graham is an award-winning playwright and actor whose plays and collaborations have been produced across Canada and internationally in the U.S., the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Her plays include Flight, Pretty Goblins, Working It Out, and the 2015 finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award, The Gravitational Pull of Bernice Trimble.

Daniela Vlaskalic is an award-winning Canadian actor, writer and producer who has worked extensively across Canada including appearing in Theatrefront's critically-acclaimed production of The Orange Dot by Sean Dixon, last year. Daniela hosts a comedic travel podcast called Every Place is the Same, produced by Drumcast Productions and available on iTunes.

Beth and Daniela previously co-created Comrades, The Vanishing Point, A Foolish Boy,and Drowning Girls which has received multiple productions and awards nationally and internationally including the Gwen Pharis Ringwood Literary award for Drama.

Director Vikki Anderson is a Toronto theatre director, designer, producer, and current Artistic Director of Theatrefront. As the founder and Artistic Director of DVxT Theatre, the company's work garnered 19 Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations and 12 Dora Awards for show such as Ibsen's The Doll House adapted by John Murrell and a site-specific production of The Turn of the Screw at the Campbell House Museum. Recently Vikki directed Top Girls at the Shaw Festival, Good People at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, and The Orange Dot for Theatrefront where she is also currently working with Playwright-in-Residence Rose Napoli.

Eva Barrie, Dora Award-winning actor, director, educator, and creator, plays Crystal. Associate Artistic Director at Shakespeare in the Ruff, Eva recently appeared in their production of Portia's Julius Caesar and pool (no water) with Cue6 Productions.
Anita Majumdar, award winning actress, playwright and dancer plays Cindy. Well-known for her critically-acclaimed Fish Eyes Trilogy, Anita recently received Dora Awards for Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Performance for her latest play, Boys With Cars.Dylan Trowbridge, actor, director and founding member of Theatrefront, plays Troy, the airport janitor. A member of the Shaw Festival company for five years, Dylan is also the Artistic Associate of Theatrefront and co-created and appeared in The Sarajevo Project.
