Emerging artist Jessica Moss makes her SummerWorks playwriting debut with A Girl Lives Alone, an ensemble comedy and a mash-up of Hitchcock, radio horror, and Law and Order: SVU.

Marion moves to New York in the wake of a break-up and a murder takes place in her walk-up apartment building. As her life starts to feel like she's trapped in a Hitchcock movie, or maybe a TV show were young girls get killed every week, Marion can't stop listening to the old-timey suspense podcasts her ex made; and the lives of the other tenants, particularly the foley artist who lives upstairs, start to push in on her walls, making the dangers of being a girl living alone seem more and more prevalent. Does living close to others keep us safe, or put us in danger? And can you keep it down up there?

Developed and workshopped at The Juilliard School, where Moss was the first Canadian woman to attend the playwriting program, the play has received dramaturgical support from Marsha Norman, Christopher Durang, and David Lindsay-Abaire. Moss's plays have previously been called 'glorious' (National Post) and 'pure joy' (NOW) and have sold out at Fringe and Next Stage festivals. She now directs her biggest and most ambitious project to date.

The show features an all-star team both on and offstage. Forming the cast is Aldrin Bundoc (I Cook, He Does the Dishes, The Theatre Centre; Body Politic, Buddies in Bad Times), Tiffany Deobald (Sex and This, Aim for the Tangent; The Tempest, Theatre Calgary), Anita La Selva (director of Stones, Aluna Theatre; The Living, SummerWorks), Samantha Madely (Butcher, GCTC; Mother Courage, Caravan Farm Theatre), Jessica Moss, Andrew Musselman (Butcher, Mirvish Productions; Catalpa, TPM), Alexander Thomas (The Nails, SummerWorks; Hangman, The Storefront Theatre), and Asha Vijayasingham (Free Outgoing, Nightwood Theatre; Stratford Festival). Rounding out the team are designers Claire Hill (set/costume; Adventures of a Redheaded Coffee Shop Girl, Toronto Fringe; Liver, Storefront Theatre), Imogen Wilson (lights; Divine, SummerWorks; Stratford Festival), and Richard Feren (sound and original composition; Animal Farm, Soulpepper; Jerusalem, Outside the March/The Company Theatre), along with stage management by Kathleen Hemsworth and Madeleine Monteleone.

Tonight in our theatre of thrills, we bring you a tale of murder, fear, and, danger. Buy a ticket. Lock your doors. And remember: it's scariest in your mind.
