The Theatre Centre is proud to present the award-winning performance artist Jess Dobkin (Artist-Run Newsstand, The Lactation Station Breast Milk Bar) in a solo performance art work, THE MAGIC HOUR.
Created in Residency at The Theatre Centre, THE MAGIC HOUR uses magic as a medium to explore the similarities between trauma and performance and the transformative power of art on trauma. Within art and performance, a better future world can be envisioned. New questions can be asked and old identities can be let go. "What would a world without sexual violence be like?"
Using themes and devices of magic and ritual, from conventional entertainment to anarchic enchantments, THE MAGIC HOUR is a powerful, intimate and unexpected exchange between audience and performer, and a catalyst for a healing dialogue of hope.
"Jess' work is always surprising. Her often twisted sense of humour imbues the work with a playfulness you just don't expect." - Franco Boni, Artistic Director of The Theatre Centre
Jess Dobkin is an internationally acclaimed performance artist. She was active in the downtown performance art scene in New York City before moving to Toronto in 2002. She travels with her work internationally where her performances, lectures and curatorial projects are presented at museums, galleries, theatres, universities, festivals and public spaces. Her body is her primary tool in her practice, and she uses personal narrative as a point of departure to engage with audiences about contemporary social issues.
