'The Female Gaze' Art Auction to Benefit Seventh Stage Theatre

In celebration of Seventh Stage Theatre's last decade of work, we are thrilled to bridge the visual and performing arts with our upcoming art auction event: the female gaze. This is truly an example of artists supporting artists. The female gaze is "a feminist theoretical term representing the gaze of the female viewer. It is a response to 'the male gaze,' which represents not only the gaze of the male viewer, but also the gaze of the male character and the male creator in most works of art."

Our auction will feature a wide variety of works by women, men and trans artists who speak broadly to the idea of the female gaze. Seventh Stages Artistic Producer MJ Shaw states that "this will include actual images of women, about women, questioning the gender ideals of 'women'... it's truly up for interpretation and we are open to all forms of artwork that elicit thought and debate." Curated by multi-media artist Mark Gleberzon, the auction includes works by Sharon Barr, Kari Serrao, Rita Vindedzis, Shawn Skeir, Shelagh Howard, Katja van den Enden, Marjolyn van der Hart, Josée Savaria, Brigitte Nowak, Lorette Luzajic, Joanna Strong, Emanuel Pavao, Jannet Haites, Evan Steingarten, and more. Deadline for submissions is April 13th, 2018.

In addition to the online auction, Waddington's will also host a reception event on Tuesday, May 1, 6:00 - 8:30 pm at their gallery at 275 King Street East, to celebrate and promote the auctioned artwork and Seventh Stage Theatre. The evening will include live music from WENDY, DARLING, Seventh Stage Theatre's upcoming show in development, and various other curated musical acts to highlight the visual theme of the female gaze. Founded in 1850, Waddington's is Canada's most diverse auction house and proudly supports a broad range of not-for-profit organizations.

• Employed dozens of emerging professional female theatre artists in positions of leadership and growth, actively tipping the scales towards more equal opportunity in Canadian theatre (currently 1 job to 4 for women-male ratio in Canadian theatre)
• Have sponsored 12 Emerging Female Artist apprenticeships, whereby a woman under 30 has the paid opportunity to learn about theatre producing, directing or acting through 3-12 month apprenticeship.
