A FUNNY THING HAPPENED
ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM
A Musical based on the ancient Roman comedies Pseudolus and Miles Gloriosus by Plautus
"I couldn't stop laughing all the way home!" -
Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by Larry Gelbart & Burt Shevelove
In the style of classic vaudeville schtick and slapstick comedy, the writers of No, No Nanette, M*A*S*H, Tootsie and Oh God! collaborated with the composer and/or lyricist of Gypsy,
The story concerns a cunning Roman slave who will do anything to win his freedom (albeit from a seemingly cushy life) and the incredibly funny situations he concocts and conquers in this quest to achieve his goal. Upsetting a harem, an ill-tempered military captain, a senile old man and the occupants of three households, he never stops until his prize is in hand sight! With an opening number, "Comedy Tonight," that sets the tone for the evening, a bizarre soft-shoe with no end in sight, entitled "Everybody Ought to Have a Maid", and witty tongue-in-cheek romantic ballads, the score is one of Stephen Sondheim's most charming and tuneful.
This new Civic Light Opera Company production features the troupe's top-notch repertory performers including DAVID HAINES, JOE CASCONE, LARRY WESTLAKE, CLINTON SOMERTON, SCOTTY NEWLANDS, LARRY GIBBS and KELLY SANDERS.
