TRUE WEST, KIM'S CONVENIENCE and More Set for Soulpepper Theatre, Spring 2013

Albert Schultz, Founding Artistic Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company, today released details about Soulpepper's 2013 four-show spring lineup, comprised of: Sam Shepard's True West; a new adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler's La Ronde by Jason Sherman; a fresh adaptation of The Barber of Seville by Michael O'Brien with music by John Millard; and Ins Choi's Kim's Convenience. True West and La Ronde begin this month; The Barber of Seville and Kim's Convenience open in May. All performances take place at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. TRUE WEST

Austin, a screenwriter, and Lee, a petty criminal, are recently reconciled brothers with little in common. Confined together in a suburban home, Austin prepares for a lucrative meeting with a Hollywood producer, a connection which prompts keen interest from Lee. Sam Shepard's searing black comedy takes apart the resentment of sibling estrangement to reveal that perceived differences are perhaps not all they seem. Soulpepper Founding Member Nancy Palk directs Ari Cohen, Patricia Hamilton, Soulpepper Founding Member Stuart Hughes, and Mike Ross. True West runs from March 25 to May 4; opening night is April 3.

LA RONDE

First published privately at the turn of the last century, Schnitzler's La Ronde was sensationally banned for obscenity due to its frank sexual content. Taking a circuitous route through ten interconnected sexual liaisons, La Ronde questions the nature of human contact, love, and fidelity. In a new Toronto-based adaptation by Jason Sherman, La Ronde examines our fascination and obsession with sex and sexuality. La Ronde is directed by Alan Dilworth and features Maev Beaty, Leah Doz, Soulpepper Founding Member Stuart Hughes, Brandon McGibbon, Brenda Robins, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Mike Ross, and, in their Soulpepper debuts, Miranda Edwards, Grace Lynn Kung, and Adrian Morningstar. THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

The Barber of Seville is a free-wheeling adaptation by Michael O'Brien and John Millard, based on the play by Beaumarchais and the opera by Rossini. This all-new update follows the beloved story of the young Count Almaviva and his pursuit of the untouchable Rosina with the help of the irrepressible Figaro, Barber of Seville. Directed by Leah Cherniak, the cast features Dan Chameroy in his Soulpepper debut, Oliver Dennis, Raquel Duffy, Courtney Ch'ng Lancaster, Gregory Prest, Soulpepper Founding Member William Webster, and Daniel Williston. The Barber of Seville runs from May 9 to June 8; opening night is May 15.

KIM'S CONVENIENCE

Soulpepper Academy alumnus Ins Choi's hilarious and touching debut play set in a Regent Park Korean convenience store was the smash hit of Soulpepper's 2012 season. The journey of a fractured buT Loving family confronting the future and forgiving the past is a Toronto classic in the making. Kim's Convenience returns to Toronto as part of a national tour, following a successful run at The Grand Theatre in London, ON. Kim's Convenience features Ins Choi, Grace Lynn Kung, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Andre Sills, and Jean Yoon. Kim's Convenience runs from May 23 to June 19; opening night is May 24.
