The local PBS station, WNED-TV, which serves all of western New York and southern Ontario, has a very good reputation of creating documentaries about local people, organizations and events. In the past they have made award-winning documentaries about such topics as the War of 1812 and the Shaw Festival.

Now, WNED focuses its lenses on Toronto's vibrant theatre community in the new documentary, TORONTO'S FIRST FAMILY OF THEATRE, which will be broadcast tonight, March 4 at 8:00 PM.

Written and directed by John Grant, the documentary begins with the fact that Toronto is today a world-class theatre destination. It then examines the reason for this and discovers that much of its success over the last 50 years can be owed to the Mirvish family.

TORONTO'S FIRST FAMILY OF THEATRE takes you back to the early 1960s when successful Toronto business owner Ed Mirvish purchased the aging Royal Alexandra Theatre, one of the most revered theatre houses in North America. Few expected the theatre novice to make a success of the Royal Alex.

The documentary features historic footage, interviews with theatre luminaries such as Colm Wilkinson and Shirley Douglas, and a behind-the-scenes look at Mirvish Productions.

TORONTO'S FIRST FAMILY OF THEATRE will repeat on March 13 at 11:30 PM, March 15 at 12:00 AM, and March 26 at 11:00 PM.
