Socratic Theatre Collective is proud to bring Crystal Skillman's Geek! to the Toronto Fringe Festival. Geek!, a high energy celebration of geekiness of all flavours, sees anime fans Danya and Honey on a quest to meet their hero, manga creator Joto Samagashi. Along the way, they must fight their way through a massive anime convention, a steampunk army, jealous frenemies, and overcome the absence of Honey's sister Ellen.
Geek! will be presented at the Randolph Theatre as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival. Co-director Liz Bragg says, "It was like this show was written for us. We're a company mainly run by female geeks, and it was amazing to see ourselves represented so well in the script." The production draws on co-director Amanda O'Halloran's lifelong passion for anime, and the process included bringing the cast to the Anime North convention to immerse themselves in the fandom culture. The production will also feature original artwork and character designs from Toronto-based graphic designer, illustrator, and writer Danielle Martin, who has helped bring the fictional anime Dante's Fire to life.
The production is directed by Socratic Theatre Artistic Director Liz Bragg and returning Socratic Theatre member Amanda O'Halloran in her directorial debut. It features returning members from Socratic Theatre shows: Basel Daoud (James Stapleton in Bitch of the Baskervilles, most recently seen as Eland on NBC's Taken), Michael Lake (The Fool in Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters, soon to be seen in the title role of Edwin from Hollow Ground Pictures), and Madryn McCabe (Magrat Garlick in Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters, most recently seen as Agnetha in Seven Siblings Theatre's Frozen). Socratic Theatre also welcomes new cast members Jules Lee as Danya, Cait MacMullin as Honey, and Jackie Mahoney (Florence McGillivray in Live History's In Time) as Gwen. The production is stage managed by Steffanie Salo (director of Studio B Theatre's Crackwalker), with costumes designed by Victoria Banjavcic (Socratic Theatre's Bitch of the Baskervilles).
Socratic Theatre Collective is a non-professional company dedicated to producing "theatre that creates a dialogue." Geek! is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.
