For their first production in 2016, Seven Siblings Theatre will present Picasso at the Lapin Agile, a surreal comedy written by legendary comic/actor/screenwriter, Steve Martin. Set in a bar in 1904 Paris, Picasso at the Lapin Agile imagines a meeting of Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in their youth, just before they each made their greatest contributions to society. One year later, Einstein publishes his Special Theory of Relativity, and in 1907, Picasso would go on to paint Les D'emoiselles D'Avignon. This irreverent comedy is both hilarious and poignant as the regulars and bar staff chime in on subjects such as love, art, the nature of genius, and what the future might hold.
Steve Martin's play was first performed as a full length production at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, and has since been produced dozens of times in the United States. The play has received much critical praise:
"Very engaging... Martin sends ideas onstage in baggy pants, with a cigar... mix[ing] the sublime with the ridiculous [so] that they can't be easily disentangled... Very good fun." - The New York Times
"Steve Martin plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune as these two geniuses muse on the century's achievements, as well as other fanciful topics with infectious dizziness. Flourishes of humanity and hilarity exist in the bars other patrons, including a late arrival by a dark haired stranger from another time." - Chicago Critic
Directed by co-founder Erika Downie, this hilarious revisionist history makes great use of its bar setting, using a site specific venue to allow the audience to be fully immersed and feel like a bar patron themselves.
