Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, and Executive Director Barry Hughson, today announced that Sadler's Wells in London, England will co-produce Frame by Frame, a collaboration between renowned theatre artist Robert Lepage and Choreographic Associate and Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté. Frame by Frame makes its world premiere tomorrow, June 1 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto.
The National Ballet will tour to Sadler's Wells with Frame by Frame in an upcoming season. The company last appeared at Sadler's Wells, the UK's leading venue dedicated to international dance, in 2013 with Romeo and Juliet by Alexei Ratmansky.
One of the most highly-anticipated cultural events of 2018, Frame by Frame is Mr. Lepage's debut with the National Ballet and Mr. Côté's second full-length ballet for the company, the first being Le Petit Princecreated in 2016. Mr. Côté has been a Principal Dancer with the National Ballet since 2004 and a Choreographic Associate since 2013.
An homage to pioneer Canadian filmmaker and animator Norman McLaren, Frame by Frame is a multidisciplinary work that follows the arc of his life and work, incorporating dance, film and theatre. Best-known for his Academy Award-winning film Neighbours and his groundbreaking dance film Pas de deux, Mr. McLaren's trailblazing experiments in animation, innovative use of sound, music and drawn-on-film techniques transformed cinema and animation forever.
Frame by Frame is a collaboration between The National Ballet of Canada, Ex Machina and the National Film Board of Canada.

Sadler's Wells commissions, produces and presents more new dance work than any other theatre in the world, embracing the popular and the unknown. Since 2005, it has helped to bring over 160 new dance works to the stage, many of them involving its 16 Associate Artists, three Resident Companies and four Associate Companies - the most exciting talents working in dance today.
It also nurtures the next generation of talent through research and development, running the National Youth Dance Company and a range of programmes including Wild Card, New Wave Associates, Open Art Surgery and Summer University. Sadler's Wells' learning and engagement activities reach over 25,000 annually through programmes that take dance out into the community and invite communities into the theatre. Projects include community productions and the renowned Company of Elders, its resident over-60s performance group, while events range from pre and post-show talks with dance artists to classes, workshops and assisted performances.
Located in Islington, north London, the current building is the sixth to have stood on site since entrepreneur Richard Sadler first established the theatre in 1683. The venue has played an illustrious role in the history of theatre ever since, with The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and English National Opera having all started at Sadler's Wells.
