Toronto, October 10, 2006 - Encore Entertainment will be presenting A.R. Gurney's charming comedy Sylvia from October 26 to November 5, 2006.  All evening performances begin at 8:00 p.m.; Sunday matinees begin at 2:00 p.m.

Set in Manhattan, Sylvia follows the travails of Greg and Kate, a middle-aged couple who have returned to the city after years of raising children in the suburbs. Greg has lost interest in his career while Kate is beginning a new one, when along comes Sylvia. Lovely and street-smart, she offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the uncertainties of middle age. However, to Kate, Sylvia is a rival for affection, a major bone of contention -- oh, and a dog, to boot!

Labeled "hilarious," "touching," and "profound" by critics, this comedy about a dog who threatens the marriage of 22 years speaks to anyone who has loved man, woman or beast. Sylvia quite credibly represents the sudden midlife passion -- whether it be an affair, a pet or an obsessively pursued hobby -- that leaves the his longtime mate baffled.

Starring in the title role originated by Sarah Jessica Parker is Toronto actor and drama teacher, Jenn Worsnop.  The role of Greg will be played by George Komorowski, who will be familiar to Encore audiences from his previous performances last season in Over the River and Through the Woods and Ragtime. Rounding out the cast are Marisa King and A. Jablonicky.

According to Producer Merle Garbe, "This is a comic drama, full of very serious moments and honest humour. This is such a simple, truthful story about relationships, about how something as simple as the addition of a dog can impact on this 22-year relationship.  It is a play that sensitively addresses one of the most challenging phases of adult life – middle age.  As always, we at Encore are counting on the support of the community, so that we can continue to provide quality theatre at an affordable price."

Tickets are $26.50 for evening performances and $25.00 for matinees.  Discounts are available for students, seniors, and groups.  Tickets can be purchased in person at the Toronto Centre Box Office, through Ticketmaster, or by phone at (416) 733-0558.
