STAGE TUBE: Sneak Peek of Dubeau & La Pieta at Aeroplan

Aeroplan® with The New Classical 96.3 FM are pleased to present Quebec violin superstar Angèle Dubeau & La Pietà, her acclaimed all-female chamber ensemble, on March 25, 2011 at 8 p.m. at the Jane Mallet Theatre of the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.

Formed by Dubeau since 1997, La Pietà will be playing a program called "Portraits: Adams, Glass & Pärt" which includes excerpts from her portraits devoted to Philip Glass, which won Quebec's 2009 "Classical Album of the Year" (ADISQ) and was nominated for a Juno, Arvo Pärt, another winner in the "Classical Album of the Year" (ADISQ) in 2010, nominated as well for a Juno, and John Adams, the composer featured on her most daring recent release, to be launched on February 22.

"Just like the music of Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt, John Adams' music speaks to me. Bearing a
particular imprint, it is music that captivates me, a complex creation but without the artifice of a composer who is becoming or has become history. I wanted also to propose compelling works, with different ensembles, like a musical portrait for my instrument," says Angèle Dubeau about this album.

To shed light on the composer's multiple facets, the works chosen cover several decades of composition and were written for different ensembles: from the duo to the double quartet, and including the septet. Featured at this concert are excerpts from the emblematic Shaker Loops, a work that propelled him onto the international scene, the playful John's Alleged Books of Dances and Road Movies, a reconsidered sonata for violin and piano.

The 90-minute without intermission Toronto concert will also feature Philip Glass' overture to La Belle et la Bête, Mishima and the popular suite from The Hours, as well as Arvo Pärt's Summa, Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten and Mozart Adagio.

An artist of rare versatility considered one of the most prominent violin virtuosos in Canada, for over 30 years Angèle Dubeau has had a dazzling career in the great concert halls of the world. With a string of some 30 recordings, many concerts with renowned orchestras and as the conductor of her own ensemble, her talent, passion and musicality have won her uncommon acclaim. "Dubeau is an exciting, dynamic fiddler... The performances were consistently robust and inquiring, taking nothing for granted...Dubeau's well-drilled band played with agility, power, a nicely weighted sound and a fierce joy in the doing," saluted the Los Angeles Times. She is the only Canadian classical musician to have been awarded two gold records for sales exceeding 50,000 albums sold in one year and has already succeeded in selling over 450,000 discs, an unheard-of exploit and an accomplishment that she continues to improve on, making her the most famous Canadian classical musician in the field.
