The British producers of Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music and Sing-a-long-a Abba will be returning to Toronto with another entry in the now infamous sing-a-long-a genre, GREASE, the highest grossing movie-musical ever.
Since the first Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music in 1999, patrons have been saying "Grease is the one that I want!"
The 40th anniversary of the original stage production of Grease is the perfect time to launch Sing-a-long-a Grease! On February 14, 1972, Grease premiered Off-Broadway before transferring to Broadway later in the year. The original musical gave rise to countless revivals, and the 1978 classic movie Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, voted the greatest musical ever on Britain's Channel 4 "100 Greatest Musicals".
Sing-a-long-a Grease is much more than 'just a film', it is also a show, an event, a fashion extravaganza, a sing-along, and the most fun you can have with your clothes on! In 2012, Sing-a-long-a Grease will tour the UK with one stop across the pond in Toronto.
Every performance starts with a Sing-a-long-a host who warms up the audience, teaches them to hand jive, shows them how to have the most fun with the contents of their complimentary goodie bag, and cues their cheers and jeers for the film.
Sing-a-long-a Greasers will don their own versions of fifties high school garb worn at Rydell High, including poodle skirts and saddle shoes, black leather biker and powder-pink bomber jackets, chiffon scarves and skinny ties, to sing along with the onscreen lyrics.
This unique, interactive entertainment form known as Sing-a-long-a was allegedly born in a seniors residence home in Inverness. The nurses wanted to involve the residents in an interactive group therapy. They screened Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and gave out song sheets so that everyone could sing-a-long.
The idea was then developed for the Sound of Music for London's Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in 1999, including many more interactive elements then just singing along. The initial sold-out eight-show run attracted huge media attention and regular shows have been running ever since, not only in London but all around the world.
"Grease" has been the word for 40 years now and the move's appeal has only grown. Superstar Justin Bieber was recently quoted saying the job he most wanted was the lead role of Danny in a remake of Grease, with Miley Cyrus as Sandy! Sorry Biebs, the result of an online poll recently conducted by YouGov in the UK chose Zac Efron and Katy Perry as their top two faves to play the young lovers.
