Raymond Dance Company Presents SEASHELLS At Dancemakers ImageRaymond Dance Company (RDC) is proud to present its inaugural production, Seashells on March 16th & 17th, 2018 at 8:00pm, with a special March Break student performance on March 16th at 4:00pm. Taking place at Dancemakers Centre for Creation, Seashells follows five women as they explore the emotions and experiences in dealing with everyday sexism.

Seashells shines a light on the commonplace of sexist actions and comments, a troubling reality for many women. Regardless of age or background, every woman has at least one story to tell about feeling unequal, unsafe, unsure, unconfident or unjustified in speaking up. These are not stories of noticeable violence or abuse. These stories reflect the hushed, seemingly insignificant subtleties in our culture that make women feel unsafe.

"The simple fact is that sexism is part of daily life for girls and women. Throughout this piece, I am commenting on the little things engrained in our culture, daily actions, comments and circumstances women have learned to navigate through each and every day. Like being told we are pretty before we are smart. Like seeing parts of our bodies become objectified and used to sell products in the media. Like having to pay more for 'female packaging' at the drugstore. Seashells will explore some of these instances, and through the personal experiences of five women, share the feelings that come from this systematic oppression." - Samantha Raymond, Director, Raymond Dance Company

As recent sexual allegations take over headlines, and the momentum from the global #metoo and #timesup social media campaign movements grow stronger, this topic continues to put the spotlight on stories and experiences of women that are no longer being tolerated or silenced.

Seashells is performed by: Caryn Chappell, Sierra Chin Sawdy, Mackenzie Carlson, Taylor Bullock and Noemie Roy, with choreography by Samantha Raymond, stage management by Hannah MacMillian and lighting design by Kiera Shaw.
