Greg said it to Kent. Carly overheard. Carly told Steph. None of their relationships will ever be the same. A play about identity and appearance, this quick-witted, volatile drama explores not only how others see us, but how we see ourselves.

Brett Houghton, Sarah Hime, and Marissa Otto proudly present Neil LaBute's Reasons to Be Pretty, August 24-26 at the The Commons Theatre. LaBute has expertly crafted raw, intense characters and dialogue which highlight larger social issues and examine how they actually manifest in everyday life.

Reasons to Be Pretty examines two couples at crossroads in their relationships, as they grapple with societal expectations of beauty, their notions of self-worth, and the ramifications of toxic masculinity.

Our team first discovered the play in 2017, during a scene study class at Sheridan College. We fell in love with the fast pace of the text combined with the raw intensity of the characters. But the more we discussed this play, the more relevant it became. LaBute has expertly taken larger social issues and examined how they actually manifest in everyday life. These characters are just trying to figure out who they are, in a world that often makes this kind of vulnerable self discovery impossible, something that many people in our generation can relate to.

"What a sensitive ear Mr. LaBute has for the uncommonness in common speech...and for how people of all levels of education and eloquence use words as instruments of power." - New York Times

Under the direction of Bryn Kennedy, Reasons to Be Pretty will star Gordon Harper as Greg, Sarah Hime as Steph, Brett Houghton as Kent, and Marissa Otto as Carly. Our team of emerging artists is bringing a fresh, bold take to LaBute's poignant piece, tackling these big themes head-on with humour, heartbreak, and loud music.
