"I think very few people are completely normal really, deep down in their private lives..."
Indie theatre company Pure Carbon announces their upcoming production of Noel Coward's Private Lives. This witty 1930s farce about exes who run into each other while on vacation with their new partners is flipped on its head in this production that infuses the play with a modern sensibility and focuses on the queer sexual politics underneath. We watch as the characters dive headfirst into their volatile, kinky relationships, sacrifice everything for love, and spiral into chaos - begging the question: Can some loves be too passionate, too intense, or too sexy to maintain?
Featuring an exciting cast of indie performers including Amanda Cordner (Body So Fluorescent - Rhubarb Festival), Brittany Cope (Mission Magnet - Brick & Mortar), Alice Lundy (Elektra - Toronto Fringe), and Alex Clay (Inch of Your Life: Episode 1 - Toronto Fringe). The production is directed and designed by Pure Carbon co-artistic directors Alexander Kentris and Katy Murphy. The show also features a chorus of singing/dancing resort staff who punctuate the action with the charming, witty songs of Cole Porter.
Private Lives was always a show ahead of it's time; censored in Britain on it's premiere for it's frank exploration of the characters sexual dalliances (out of wedlock and everything!). This production updates the action to an adults only resort in Mexico and examines this pair of lovers with modern eyes adding new layers to the play. How does technology, the rise of open relationships, and fetish culture change these characters and their relationships?
