On Monday morning Mirvish Productions unveiled their 2012-2013 season, which features the world premiere of Honeymoon in Vegas starring Tony Danza, an all-Canadian cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Wizard of Oz, and the smash-hit Book of Mormon. Also announced were touring productions of La Cage Aux Folles and Sister Act, as well as the musical Backbeat, direct from London. The pre-Broadway run of Flashdance (directed and choreographed by hometown boy Sergio Trujillo) was added as a bonus show, and Mirvish announced a collaboration with Theatre 20 on Bloodless, to be directed by Colm Wilkinson.
David Mirvish was dressed to impress as he announced the season as a scarecrow, a tinman and a cowardly lion, creating buzz and anticipation for the official word that Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest UK hit The Wizard of Oz would be making its Canadian debut. Also on hand for the announcement was composer Jason Robert Brown who debuted songs from his new musical Honeymoon in Vegas. Star Tony Danza was on hand to announce his participation in the project and sing one of the songs from the show.
Guests were also treated to performances from Sister Act, Flashdance and The Wizard of Oz, which featured UK production's Dorothy (Emma Houseley) singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Bobby Lopez and Anne Garefino were on hand to discuss Book of Mormon, which was greeted with tremendous excitement by Toronto audiences who had been praying that Mirvish would pick up the rights to the production.
All in all it was a very successful Monday morning at the Ed Mirvish Theatre, and BWW is thrilled to bring its readers some photos from the event.
