Nominations were announced yesterday for the 33rd Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards at a news conference at the Elgin/Wintergarden Theatre. The Awards celebrate the best in Toronto theatre, and will be handed out June 25th, 2012, at The St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.
Leading the pack this year is Acting Up Stage Company, who’s production of Caroline or Change has ten nominations (and a nomination for Ride the Cyclone brings Acting Up Stage to a total of eleven nods). Nightwood Theatre and Theatre Passe Muraille were right behind with six nominations each for their productions of The Penelopiad and Crash. Three companies are celebrating four nominations, including Tarragon Theatre’s The Golden Dragon, Obsidian Theatre/Shaw Festival’s Topdog/Underdog and Mirvish Production’s War Horse.
There are three special awards being given out this year, as well as the thirty five juried awards. The special honourees are Ruth Howard (The George Luscombe Award for Mentorship), Leslie Lester (The Leonard McHardy and John Harvey Award) and Richard Rose (The Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award).
