Two gay men, a minister and an all-new Gospel. Provocative and moving, Pacific Theatre presents The Busy World is Hushed, produced by one2theatre. Brant is a 30-year-old gay man who is losing his father to a terminal illness and applies for a job assisting Hannah, a widowed Episcopalian Priest, in translating an ancient coptic text. When her son Thomas bursts in from his latest round of survival game "get lost", he stirs up mayhem and mystery as both Brant and Hannah begin looking for ways to entice him to stay. Love and loss, religion and sexuality are all grappled with and fought over. There are no easy answers as everyone searches for a safe place to land and find peace at the last.
As the debate over same-sex marriage continues in churches across North America, The Busy World is Hushed goes beyond the dogma to bring us a tender love story, filled with hope and heartbreak. Challenging everything from the purpose of religion to the western medical establishment, with characters that say what they think more than what they feel, this play probes the relationships between parents and their children as well as two men desperate for hope and struggling to find someone that feels like home.
Keith Bunin has been called one of New York's "essential" playwrights (Time Out, New York) yet this is the first time his work has been produced in Vancouver. Other works include The Credeaux Canvas, The Principality of Sorrows and The World Over. As a screenwriter his credits include the HBO drama In Treatment. With a gift for dialogue and razor-sharp intellect, his writing packs an emotional punch that's not afraid to wade into controversial territory. Originally produced Off-Broadway in 2006, The Busy World is Hushed is often considered the most autobiographical of Bunin's plays.
Directed by Pi Theatre's Richard Wolfe and starring the award-winning Gina Chiarelli, with Adam Bergquist and Sebastian Kroon, The Busy World is Hushed makes its Vancouver debut as a guest production at Pacific Theatre, placing this powerful and controversial play in the basement of a church.
