In alignment with Crow's Theatre's 2018/19 Season Announcement, Nightwood Theatre is pleased to announce its production of Grace by Jane Doe in January 2019.
"There was no justice, there was just a legal outcome." In the wake of a young woman's disclosure of childhood sexual assault, a family presses charges. But as they put the case together, they must confront a new challenge. Grace is an exquisite and heartbreaking piece of documentary theatre about the pursuit of truth and justice. This new work unflinchingly examines our legal system - its loopholes and its failures - through the lens of a playwright searching for how to share her family's story.
"In the #MeToo era, Grace instigates a brutally honest and pertinent discussion about the failure of our legal system by reframing the conversation to involve our lawmakers," says Kelly Thornton, Artistic Director of Nightwood Theatre. "At a time when too many survivors seeking justice are faced with the insurmountable challenges of provability, we are proud to further this discussion with our art." After the success of our Consent Event Series in Fall 2017, including the smash hits Asking for It by Ellie Moon and Lo (Or Dear Mr. Wells) by Rose Napoli, Nightwood Theatre is thrilled to return to Crow's Theatre with yet another powerful piece of feminist theatre addressing systemic power imbalance in our society.
*Faced with the conflict between sharing her family's story and protecting their privacy, the playwright has chosen the pseudonym of Jane Doe.
TICKETS will range from Pay-What-You-Can pricing to $40 and are available in person at Streetcar Crowsnest Box Office (345 Carlaw Ave.), over the phone at 647-341-7390, or at crowstheatre.com.
