Outside the March, the creative force behind last year's Mr. Marmalade, is teaming up with Dora Award-winning performer David Ferry and Theatre Passe Muraille to present the Canadian Premiere of Mike Daisey's The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs. The production will premiere in Toronto in May 2012, directed by OtM Co-Artistic Director Mitchell Cushman.
Agony and Ecstasy exposes shady secrets and cutting edge technology. You'll need an iphone, ipad or blackberry to track us down. The show begins when we text out directions to the night's secret location.
The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs is monologuist Mike Daisey's exposé of the human cost paid in order to produce our steady flow of hip technological gadgets. A self-professed “worshipper in the cult of Mac”, Daisey has his faith badly shaken when he takes a trip to Shenzhen, China and the Foxconn Factory. There Daisey witnesses the utterly inhuman conditions under which nearly half of the world's electronics are made by hand—including all of the i-products we've become addicted to.
Donning Daisey's i-mantle for the Canadian Premiere will be Dora Award-winning performer David Ferry, recently seen on Toronto stages starring in Blasted and Eternal Hydra. In 2009, Ferry directed Cellularfor the Young Centre as part of Luminato, transmitted to its audiences entirely through Blackberry cellphones.
Director Mitchell Cushman is a Resident Artist at Theatre Passe Muraille, and has worked for Soulpepper, Crows Theatre and Luminato. Previous recent directing credits include the Canadian Premiere of Will Eno's Oh The Humanity and Other Good Intentions(Outside the March) and the World Premiere of Haley McGee's Oh My Irma(Edmonton Fringe).
Outside the March's production of The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs will be presented in Toronto throughout May 2012 in a series of secret locations. Email agony@outsidethemarch.ca, to reserve you a ticket and get further instructions. For more information, visit www.outsidethemarch.ca.
