MUSIC ON FILM Enters Its Sixth Year

The Royal Conservatory of Music and Hot Docs celebrate the sixth annual edition of this unique and ever-popular film series. Exploring and honouring music genres from around the world, Music on Film features stimulating post-screening discussions and short performances with accomplished musicians moderated by Mervon Mehta, Executive Director of The Royal Conservatory of Music's Performing Arts Division.

Music on Film screens select Tuesdays, from October 24-April 24 at Hot Docs TEd Rogers Cinema.

FLIGHT OF THE GUITAR: DREAMING OF PACO DE LUCÍA

In the passionate and entrancing world of flamenco guitar, Paco de Lucía's 'La Maestro' is afforded as much respect and awe as the late Spaniard himself. This is an intense and heartfelt homage to the undeniable symbiosis between flamenco music, the culture, and spirituality of Latin music.

Guitarist Kevin Laliberté will be our special guest for a Q&A and short performance after the screening.

CONDUCT! EVERY MOVE COUNTS

Every two years, 24 young conductors travel to the Frankfurt Opera House to compete in the Sir Georg Solti Conductors' Competition, the world's leading conducting competition. Go backstage with this film as it follows five of these conductors through evaluation rounds to the finals.

Conductor Tania Miller will participate in a post-screening discussion along with a performance by Royal Conservatory students.

STRAD STYLE

Self-described 'nobody' Danny Houck pours all his time and energy into his obsession: violins. When Danny befriends violin virtuoso Razvan Stoica on Facebook, he makes a rash fanboy promise to create a perfect replica of a world-famous violin-Guarneri's Il Cannone-for Stoica's next concert.

Jonathan Crow, concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, will bring along his own Guarneri and participate in a post-show Q&A.

MAMA AFRICA

Miriam Makeba was one of the first African musicians who won international stardom and whose music was always anchored in her traditional South African roots. Forced into exile in 1959, this doc traces 50 years of her music and her performing life.

THE ORCHESTRA DI PIAZZO VITTORIO

Under Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the arts scene in Rome suffered, with blatant racism on the rise, the chances of thriving as an immigrant and artist in Italy were slim. So, when a multi-ethnic orchestra, Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio, sprang into being in 2002-it hit the headlines.

Members of the New Canadian Global Music Orchestra will participate in post-screening performance and Q&A.

SONG OF LAHORE

(D: Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Andy Schocken | Pakistan, USA | 2015 | 82 min | PG)

Meet and discover the cultural heritage of Pakistan's classical musicians. After toiling in obscurity for years, an innovative album leads Sachal Studios to international acclaim, and a triumphant concert with Wynton Marsalis and his orchestra at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Toronto-based musicians Anwar Kurshid (sitar), Luis Denis (saxophone), and Matias Recharte (percussion) will join for the post-screening performance and Q&A.

Hot Docs TEd Rogers Cinema is a historic, century-old cinema located in Toronto's vibrant Annex neighbourhood. Owned and operated by Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, the 684-seat venue is a year-round home for first-run Canadian and international documentaries, as well as special documentary presentations and showcases, including the popular Doc Soup screening series. Continuing its longstanding role as a community cinema, it also hosts many of the city's independent film festivals and is a proud member of the Bloor St. Culture Corridor. In June 2016, a donation from the Rogers Foundation enabled Hot Docs to purchase the cinema.

The Royal Conservatory of Music is one of the largest and most respected music and arts education institutions in the world.
