Luminato, Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity, presents its2010 visual arts and fashion program featuring commissioned installations. Imaginative andambitious works will transform Toronto's public spaces with pieces that challenge notions ofurban space and artistic expression. Luminato 2010 takes place June 11-20, 2010.
Renowned Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller will bring their salvaged Chinese junk boat Ship O' Fools to Trinity Bellwoods Park. An amalgamation of Eastern designand Western allegory, Ship O' Fools offers Luminato's festival-goers an interactive encounterwith Cardiff and Bures Miller's distinctive and experimental art.
Miami-based art collectiveFriendsWithYou and their family of colourful characters visit Toronto for the first time with theWish Come True Festival, an installation commissioned by Luminato that will be situated atQueen's Park. Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids) | Light Air, curated by acclaimed film directorAtom Egoyan, is a tribute to late Luminato co-founder David Pecaut. This video installationcombines the work of two Canadian visual artists, esteemed Michael Snow and emerging artist Mani Mazinani.
Luminato will also showcase the art of clothing design, as fashion innovator Mark Fast takes his iconic knit-wear to new heights with an architectural blend of art, fashion, and beauty. "Once again our visual arts program will take over the city: a ship-wrecked Chinese junk boat inTrinity Bellwoods Park; huge, colourful, inflatable characters nestled amongst the trees inQueen's Park; and a stunning rose sculpture and dress woven into the arches of Toronto'sBrookfield Place," says Luminato's Artistic Director Chris Lorway. "Each art and fashioninstallation offers an engaging, non-traditional, and thought-provoking art experience."

Complete 2010 Luminato visual arts and fashion programs: Ship O' FoolsAward-winning Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller will bring their most recentinstallation, Ship O' Fools, to Trinity Bellwoods Park. Ship O' Fools is a salvaged 9-metre-long Chinese junk boat transformed into an interactive installation of sound and light. In a reflection of Luminato's East/West curatorial threads, the title Ship O' Fools refers to a long-standing allegoryand powerful theme within western literature and art. Festival-goers can board the ship one at atime to reflect on the interpretation of a pilotless vessel and view the artwork's intricate details andsounds. Cardiff and Bures Miller have represented Canada at the Venice Biennale, have workshowcased in the Permanent Collection at the National Gallery of Canada, and are knowninternationally for their imaginative, experimental sound installations. Wednesday, June 16 - Sunday, June 20 at Queen's ParkFREEMark FastOne of the world's hottest up-and-coming fashion designers, Canadian-born Mark Fasttranscends the boundary between art, fashion, and beauty with an installation commissioned for Luminato in partnership with Lancôme. Fast will create a new kind of knitted sculpture, one which spirals out from a platform and through the architecture of the Allen Lambert Galleria in Brookfield Place.
This blend of fashion, interpreting the rose, and sculptural installation literally elevatesFast's famous knit-wear. Fast has built his international reputation by using his own stitchingtechniques on blends of Lycra with wool, angora, or viscose to create hand-formed garments forwomen. Festival-goers can experience this extraordinary undertaking by one of the fashion world's boldest innovators. Mark Fast is presented by Lancôme.
Friday, June 11 - Sunday, June 20 at the Adam Lambert Galleria, Brookfield Place FREE Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids) | Light Air Renowned film director Atom Egoyan curates a tribute to late Luminato co-founder David Pecaut with Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids) | Light Air. This installation is inspired by the letters that Pecaut wrote to Egoyan before his death in December, 2009. The tribute combines the works ofMichael Snow and Mani Mazinani in one visual arts event. Snow, whose more than fifty-yearcareer has encompassed experimental filmmaking, sculpture, painting, music, and photography,is one of Canada's most celebrated Master artists. Mani Mazinani is a recent graduate of the University of Toronto, where he studied under Egoyan. He is an emerging artist, composer, and musician.
The tribute juxtaposes Snow's 2002 film Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids) with LightAir, a work created in response by Mazinani.
