Love, Loss and What I Wore is a smash-hit off Broadway, and is getting its Canadian premiere this month courtesy of Michael Rubinoff in association with Daryl Roth. Love, Loss and What I Wore is an intimate collection of stories by Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron that are based on the book by Ilene Beckerman. Touching and poignant, the stories use clothing and accessories and the memories that they trigger to tell tales that all women can relate to.
The show features a rotating cast of some of Canada's most talented leading ladies, beginning with Paula Brancati, AndRea Martin, SharRon Matthews, Louise Pitre and Mary Walsh. It has its official opening night on July 21st, 2010 at The Panasonic Theatre in Toronto.
I was lucky enough to be able to see one of the Off-Broadway performances in July in advance of the show's Canadian debut, and am happy to report that this is a fun and unique theatrical experience that I think Canadian audiences will love.
The show is similar in concept to something like The Vagina Monologues, and would make an excellent girls night out. The stories that are told are funny, heart-warming, touching and even sad - and can appeal to every woman. I went in thinking that I probably wouldn't enjoy it very much, because I generally don't consider myself much of a "girly-girl" or someone who puts much stock in clothing or accessories. Therefore, the premise of using those items to tell stories and make memories felt like it would be a lost concept to me. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Almost as soon as the show started I found myself laughing, crying and nodding along with the actresses and everyone else in the theatre.
I don't want to give anything away, but the stories that these women tell are truly remarkable in their ability to remind you of things you may have long forgotten. How you felt your first day of school, or during your very first date, or the first time someone breaks your heart. Love, Loss and What I Wore is an amazing ninety minutes where you can relive some of the most important moments of your life - and perhaps even remember some article of clothing long forgotten that meant more to you than you ever truly realized.
With an all-star Canadian cast of incredible and remarkable women, this show will not disappoint. I hope Canadian audiences go in with an open mind and embrace the stories and the feelings that they inspire, and hopefully walk out of the theatre with a grin on their face from a truly touching trip down memory lane.
