Jason Robert Brown's acclaimed musical The Last Five years begins its engagement at London's The Grand Theatre today and plays until February 6th. The show originally played off-Broadway in 2002 where it won the Drama Desk Award for outstanding music and lyrics and received many additional nominations.
The Last Five Years is a one-act musical written by Jason Robert Brown who has been described by many as "the new Stephen Sondheim." Brown is a leading member of a new generation of composers, and this musical explains why. Fresh, funny and poignant, The Last Five Years explores a five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein, a rising novelist, and Catherine Hyatt, a struggling actress. The show uses a unique form of story-telling, in which Catherine travels back in time (beginning the show at the end of their marriage) and Jamie travels forward (beginning just after the couple meet) and the two never interact directly.
The Last Five Years has developed a very devoted and loyal fanbase, with a popular cast recording featuring Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Renee Scott available on Sh-K-Boom records. This is the musicals first foray into London and it is one that is not to be missed. A rare opportunity to see this great piece of art in Southwestern Ontario.
Susan Ferly, Artistic Director of The Grand describes the show as "a perfect mix of funny, sexy, and exhilarating and heartbreaking. It's an amazing story because it explores how every relationship holds such humour, joy and heartache."
The London cast consists of Julie Martell as Catherine and Mark Uhre as Jamie. It is being directed by Vikki Anderson.
Previews run Jan 19th - Jan 21st and opening night is Friday Jan 22nd.
