The award-winning Kaeja d'Dance, under the artistic direction of husband and wife team Allen and Karen Kaeja, proudly presents X-ODUS and Crave, an evening of two electrifying new dances - with Allen choreographing the former and Karen the latter - infused with the extreme and graceful kinetics audiences have come to associate with this acclaimed company. This cutting-edge double bill is rooted in each artist's take on intimacy, solitude and the attempt to connect. Performed by an ensemble offive exquisite dancers, X-ODUS and Crave runs Tuesday, May 7 to Saturday, May 11 at Enwave Theatre as part of Harbourfront Centre's NextSteps.
In X-ODUS, Allen Kaeja utilizes his trademark " hyper physical, high impact choreography" (Toronto Star) to uncover pathways and connections between five individuals as they struggle to find intimacy, vulnerability and depth in their both fragile and explosive journeys. To arrive, one has to leave.
Karen Kaeja's Crave is a telling duet of the beauty and chaos of intimacy that explores how lack of intimacy makes us both seek and reject the other - and our contradictory desires in the triangle of coupledom: person, person, couple. When do we expose/hide oneself to the other, walk on eggshells/ be bold, lose/find our sense of self by conforming/rising to the other's expectations? Racing hearts navigate loneliness, unsettledness and the hope that keeps us hanging on.
