Opening January 16th, 2009, Hart House Theatre presents the Canadian Premiere of Britain's notorious satirical opera Jerry Springer-The Opera running until January 31st.
Closely following Hart House Theatre's last Canadian Premiere of a major Musical (Reefer Madness in September 2006) the Theatre is proud to announce another coup in its securing the rights to present the sensational and award winning Jerry Springer-The Opera. The blockbuster musical that took London's West End by storm for over 600 performances, recently played Carnegie Hall as a concert adaptation to sold-out audiences. Helming the perfect marriage of the High Art form of Opera to the lowest form of pop culture, daytime "trash tv", is Richard Ouzounian who most recently directed the Canadian Premiere of Stephen Sondheim's Anyone Can Whistle.
"Ever since I saw the exciting productions of "The Rocky Horror Show" and "Reefer Madness" at Hart House Theatre, I knew this would be the only place daring enough to do something as cutting-edge as "Jerry Springer-The Opera"," says Ouzounian. "I've loved the show and wanted to direct it ever since the first time I heard its gloriously tasteless score. Any musical with a chorus of tapping Ku Klux Klansmen or songs like 'Mama, Gimme Smack on the A**hole' was destined to wind up on my resume."
Attached with a warning label for "mature audiences only", Toronto audiences will have the distinction of being the first in Canada to see Jerry Springer-The Opera; the show that everybody is talking about but very few in North America have seen.
