Ghost Light Projects has announced their double bill of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH and DEBBIE DOES DALLAS, which will open October 23rd and run through November 8th at the Theatre Centre in Toronto. Seth Drabinsky will headline in his Toronto stage debut as the sexually confused songstress Hedwig Schmidt which opens next week.
HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH will join the Toronto premiere of DEBBIE DOES DALLAS - THE MUSICAL for a limited engagement, playing October 22 to November 8, 2009. Taking the lead in synchronizing the porn classic and with the tranny rock cult hit is director Penelope Corrin in her first role since her tenure on CBC's Royal Canadian Air Farce.
Stephen Trask, writer of the songs and lyrics in HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, has personally selected the group The Vicious Guns to back Drabinsky in his portrayal of the internationally ignored song stylist and victim of a botched sex change on her journey from East Berlin to a trailer park in Middle America.
DEBBIE DOES DALLAS - THE MUSICAL, which premiered in New York City in 2002 finally finds its way to Toronto. The musical follows young Debbie Benton in her pursuit of becoming a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. This production has new arrangements by musical director Greg Gibson and is loaded with choreography by Jason Franco, which will prove these good girls have what it takes.
The double bill of DEBBIE DOES DALLAS at 7pm and HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH at 9pm will offer audience the complete cathartic range of song, dance, bawdy humour, heartbreaking beauty and the truth of the American dream. In the tradition of Aristophanes' Lysistrata, Debbie uses her sexuality to get what she wants. Her choices beg the question, "What precious gifts have I traded for a perceived ultimate dream?" Hedwig answers that question. Having traded a precious inch of her dream, she realizes that the true journey to becoming whole is inward. With allusions to Greek comedy and tragedy, these shows are best seen together.
Canadian Comedy Award winner and Gemini Award Nominee Penelope Corrin directs both productions in her first role since saying farewell to Royal Canadian Air Farce.
Previewing October 22, 2009, DEBBIE DOES DALLAS and HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH open October 23 and run until November 8 at the Theatre Centre in Toronto.
