The Canadian Stage Company is pleased to announce the Martin Bragg Endowment Fund, established in honour of outgoing Artistic Producer Martin Bragg.
To date colleagues and associates have donated $50,000 to establish the fund, which will be directed towards a Canadian Stage Company initiative of Mr. Bragg's choice. Contributions for the endowment fund continue to be received. The campaign was spearheaded by Bill MacKinnon, who served on The Canadian Stage Company Board of Directors from 1991-2002, and as Chair from 1999-2002. "It is vital to honour the legacy of a man who has had such a profound impact on this organization," explains MacKinnon. "This endowment will mean that Marty can continue to make a difference in the Company that is so close to his heart."
The endowment was presented to Mr. Bragg yesterday evening in a short onstage ceremony after the opening night performance of Shirley Valentine at the Bluma Appel Theatre.
Mr. Bragg, The Canadian Stage Company's longest serving artistic head, relinquishes his post at the end of this month after 17 years of service.
Martin Bragg joined The Canadian Stage Company in 1992 as Managing Director and Producer, and in 1998 became the Artistic Producer of the Company - which uniquely combined the positions of Artistic Director and Managing Director. Before joining the company, Mr. Bragg worked on numerous international projects, including Expo '92 in Seville, Spain. Prior to that, at the age of 27, he became the youngest-ever General Manager and Producer in the history of Vancouver's Playhouse Theatre Company, and served in that capacity from 1981-1989. The versatile Mr. Bragg has worked in theatres across Canada, as production manager at the National Arts Centre and as a stage manager at The Stratford Festival, Tarragon Theatre, Factory Theatre and Young People's Theatre, and as an actor before that. Mr. Bragg brought a new and creative energy to the management of Canadian Stage which combined strong bottom-line business principals, a keen collaborative spirit and a passion for live theatre.
