It’s really comforting when you see that type of musical that comes and breaks the rhythm of Quebec’s own shows. We often forget the origins of musical theatre and shows as well written as SHREK reminds us of the genre.

The story is worthy of a fairy tale - a green ogre helps a princess who is looking for her prince and they fall in love along the way. Let’s not forget his sidekick in the form of a soulful donkey, and the supposed prince charming that just happens to be the villain. All of it is written in a hysterical manner, almost psychotique, and we can’t help but laugh throughout the show.

Shrek and Donkey are excellent actors with beautiful voices. Donkey also has a strong comedic timing to match. As for Princess Fiona, she also has a magnificent voice and she dances as if she was on Broadway, but her acting is left to be desired. Special mention to Lord Farquaad who makes a super villain, and who could have his own show. Very strong ensemble, everybody is in it’s place.

The costumes are worthy of New York, and the set is very well adapted for a touring show. The dance numbers are very impressive, especially the one where Princess Fiona tap dances with a bunch of rats.

We want more of that type of musicals in Montreal. It’s a masterpiece that deserves to be seen, and seen again.

Shrek, the musical completed its run at Place des arts yesterday, March 18, and next heads to Toronto.
