Friday, May 4 - WHAT an afternoon!
Artistic Director, Jeremy Webb, hosted Neptune Theatre's first ever Show and Tell event. The event took place last Friday at 4pm and was free for the public to attend. Several families were in attendance to get a glance at Neptune's production of one of the world's most successful musicals, MAMMA MIA!.
The event consisted of the company performing the Overture, "Money Money Money" and the finale "Megamix". In between,
Jeremy Webb took to the stage demonstrating theatre magic before our eyes, including: how the lights work, microphones that actors wear, a preview of the set, meeting the band and having a Q&A with the featured actors. The Q&A was enjoyable as the children had a chance to ask the actors all kinds of questions; ranging from "Do you eat?" (the answer is - a lot) and "How does it feel to have money fall on you?". These may be elementary questions, but it gave children a chance to be in the spotlight and have an opportunity to talk to professional actors. These questions made me think about how important it is not only for children to visit the theatre with loved ones, but to have an understanding of what goes on behind a show.
After the event, I had a chance to chat with
Jeremy Webb about the inspiration for the event. Webb stated that he has two children who are a little young to see the show, and wanted them to have a chance to see "what daddy does". On the note of Mamma Mia!, I asked Webb if he felt the show was a daunting task as it is a hugely known phenomenon on stage and screen international. "If you do not feel daunted, stop. Be challenged and never be complacent."
Well said, sir! Applause to
Jeremy Webb and for the staff of
Neptune Theatre for hosting a unique theatre experience for families within the Halifax Regional Municipality. You could sense the excitement of these families and I was impressed with how this event was "for the kids". Neptune, on the behalf of myself and other educators, PLEASE host another Show and Tell in the future! Who knows - the future of Neptune could be in the hands of one of these young attendees!
