BWW is excited to bring its readers a chance to win a pair of tickets to Seth Rudetsky's Deconstructing Broadway in Toronto on Tuesday September 28th. For those not familiar with Seth, he is the daily Broadway host on Sirius/XM radio and a bit of a New York legend. He won the title "Funniest Gay Male in NY" at Stand-Up NY and spent two years as a comedy writer on The Rosie O'Donnell Show. The last time he was in Toronto was twenty years ago when he was the music director of FOREVER PLAID, and he's coming back for one night only to share his private video/audio collection of Broadway treats and deconstruct what and why something is vocally amazing (Patti LuPone in Evita) and what and why something is a vocal travesty (Madonna singing the same material)
Seth took a few minutes to speak with BWW before arriving in Toronto, and in connection with the interview we are offering three pairs of tickets to his show! All you have to do is write in to kelly@broadwayworld.com and tell us what your favourite Broadway song is and why. Seth will personally choose the winners and everyone will be notified by Monday afternoon!
In the meantime, brush up on your Broadway with Seth and BWW as we chat Top 5's, Broadway Divas, diets (of course) and Toronto!
This is your first time performing "Deconstructing Broadway" in Toronto. What can the audience expect?
I have done this show enough at this point to know that this sh*t is funny. If I can get belly laughs in Amish County Pennsylavania, I can bring down the house anywhere!
For fans who know of you from Sirius Radio, what is different about coming to see you live and in person?
Besides my crazy, obsessive OCD analysis of what is amazing on Broadway and what is a nachtmare, radio audiences will finally get to see my video collection. Until you've seen Cher singing "I Feel Pretty" you haven't experienced a deep state of shock.
I'm sure you'll all get to see Audra MacDonald glaring as I talk about why Sopranos give me a headache
If you had to name your Top Five Broadway Divas of all time, who would they be and why?
Betty Buckley, Patti LuPone, Laurie Beechman, Barbra Streisand all changed Broadway belting. They brought the standard high note up to the level of vocal damage and also added their fabulous acting chops to the mix. Susan Johnson (The Most Happy Fella) was the very first Broadway Belter Diva I was ever obsessed with. She had the brassiness, the sassy vibrato and the sense of humor in everything she sang.
And what about your Top Five Broadway shows?
Current fave: IN THE HEIGHTS. Of all time: West Side Story, Gypsy, A Chorus Line, Evita, Dreamgirls (not to mention Hair)
Finally, since you gave us your Top Five "Deconstructing Broadway" videos - could you give us your Top Five reasons for coming out to see the show live in Toronto?
1. Come see if my humor translates to the 416 area code
2. Come see my new line of t-shirts (seriously)
3. You will leave obsessing about some Broadway song/singer and immediately have to go home and haul out ye olde iPod
4. Do I really speak that fast in person?
5. Come see my fabulous new body (started a diet two days ago)
