The Coal Mine, a new independent theatre in Toronto's east end, founded by Chief Engineers Diana Bentley and Ted Dykstra, proudly presents their third season of fearlessly challenging plays, produced, directed, designed and performed at the highest possible level. With less than 100 seats available per performance, The Coal Mine is inspired by the intimacy and excitement of the off-off-Broadway experience.

Firmly entrenched in the 1454 Danforth Avenue location, the Coal Mine will be home to three Toronto premiere productions by international playwrights, plus a special Coal Mine Christmas presentation for the 2016-17 Season.

BREATHING CORPSES by English playwright Laura Wade (Other Hands) premiered at The Royal Court Theatre in 2005 and won Ms. Wade the Critic's Circle Theatre Award for Most Promising Playwright. Encountering death in life, and feeling dead while still alive, Amy has found another dead body in a hotel bedroom. David Ferry returns to the Coal Mine after directing Bull in the first season and starring in The River last season.

A COAL MINE CHRISTMAS, the Coal Mine's first-ever holiday show, stars Kenneth Welsh in a dramatic reading of Dylan Thomas' iconic poem A Child's Christmas in Wales, and a decidedly non-traditional holiday concert by chanteuse Louise Pitre.

Following last year's sold-out smash hit Killer Joe, the Coal Mine features another play by Tracy Letts (August: Osage County), SUPERIOR DONUTS, soon to be seen as a network television comedy. Set in the historic Uptown neighbourhood of Chicago, a donut proprietor and his young employee swap smart jokes and social commentary as they navigate their cross-racial, cross-generational friendship.

An unsettling drama from English playwright Dennis Kelly (co-writer Matilda the Musical), ORPHANS, which premiered at the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh in 2009, is a gritty urban tale that questions morality, loyalty and family while trying to keep quiet the violence and evil that lurks inside everyone.

2016-17 marks the third Coal Mine Season. The inaugural 2014-15 award-winning season featured The Motherf**ker With The Hat written by Stephen Adly Guirgis and directed by Layne Coleman; Strindberg's Creditors directed by Rae Ellen Bodie; and Bull written by Mike Bartlett and directed by David Ferry. The sophomore 2015-16 award-winning season presented The River written by Jez Butterworth and directed by Ted Dykstra; Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale directed by Graham Abbey; and Killer Joe written by Tracy Letts and directed by Peter Pasyk.
