BACKBEAT, the dramatic story of the Beatles' fledgling beginnings, was a rocking success at the Royal Alexandra Theatre this summer. The show, which began on July 20, 2012 and ended September 2, 2012, played 50 performances to over 70,000 theatregoers, averaging 95% capacity.
Written by Iain Softley and Stephen Jeffreys and directed by the multi-award-winning David Levaux, BACKBEAT is a startling, hyper-authentic and gritty look at the roots of the most famous rock 'n' roll band in the world. Toronto audiences appreciated the show's balance between crowd-pleasing musical performances and powerful drama.
Given Toronto's success, the show is now set to play Los Angeles in January 2013 and there is strong pressure for a Broadway transfer. Plans are also underway for a German-language production of the show to open in Hamburg, the setting for much of the play's action.
