The acclaimed Art of Time Ensemble, under the Artistic Direction of Andrew Burashko, presents The Songbook 5, featuring celebrated Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah Slean, on Tuesday, May 24 and Wednesday, May 25 at Harbourfront Centre's Enwave Theatre.

Multiple Juno and Gemini nominee Sarah Slean performs 12 of her favourite songs, including original material and covers of songs by Ruth Lowe (I'll Never Smile Again), Leonard Cohen (A Thousand Kisses Deep), Joni Mitchell (Little Green), Blue Rodeo (Bad Timing), Björk (Joga), Kurt Weil (Lost In The Stars), Jacques Brel (Ne Me Quitte Pas), Queen (The Show Must Go On) and others; re-imagined by extraordinary composers from the worlds of classical, jazz and pop music. Accompanying Slean is the Art of Time Ensemble, featuring some of the finest classical and jazz musicians in the country.

The evening also features a brand-new instrumental suite by award-winning composer Jonathan Goldsmith, commissioned by the Art of Time Ensemble with support from the Esther Gelber Fund which is administered by the Canadian Music Centre.
Sarah Slean - Over the course of her 12-year career, Sarah Slean has made six albums, starred in short films and a movie musical, published two volumes of poetry, held exhibitions of her paintings and shared the stage with four of the country's leading orchestras. She has been nominated for two Geminis, three Junos, and her records have been released in over 10 countries worldwide. Her latest album is Beauty Lives and her previous one is called The Baroness; an EP of its out-takes entitled The Baroness Redecorates showcases her remarkable talent as a string arranger. Slean has recently completed a degree in music and philosophy at the University of Toronto. For Art of Time Ensemble, she previously performed a Songbook in 2007 and appeared in its acclaimed Abbey Road in 2009 and in the remount at Koerner Hall in 2010.

The Art of Time Ensemble is one of Toronto's most innovative and artistically resonant music ensembles. The ensemble provides a unique musical experience that breaks down barriers between artistic and musical disciplines, and reveals the vibrancy of classical music as a contemporary artistic expression, appealing to a range of audiences. John Terauds of The Toronto Star calls the group in performance "a delicate balance between classical expression and modern sensibility," and said of the Ensemble's most recent production this season, The War of the Worlds, "It's a brilliant effort, thanks to the work of three talented actorsŠ 10 musicians and the ear-popping sound effects of sound artist John Gzowski."
