April 2019 At The TSO: Monumental Works Include Beethoven Eroica Symphony And Mahler Resurrection Symphony

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) waltzes into April with masterpieces by Beethoven, Szymanowski, and Mahler, bookended by an irresistible Pops program and a toe-tapping family concert.

American conductor Richard Kaufman (Principal Pops Conductor of Pacific Symphony, and Pops Conductor Laureate of the Dallas Symphony) makes his TSO début with Best of Hollywood (April 2, 3 & 6). Kaufman shares the stage with his own daughter, singer/actress Whitney Claire Kaufman, offering music from Tinseltown's most memorable films-including selections from such fabulous scores as The Untouchables, Frozen, Out of Africa, Ben-Hur, Dr. Zhivago, The Wizard of Oz, The Magnificent Seven, The Godfather, Gone with the Wind, and many more-complete with stories and anecdotes shared throughout the performance.

French conductor Louis Langrée returns to the TSO April 10, 12 & 13 to conduct Beethoven Eroica Symphony-one of the composer's most celebrated works. This masterpiece is paired with Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, and the shimmering Violin Concerto No. 1 by Szymanowski, performed by German virtuoso Christian Tetzlaff. On April 12, The TSO Chamber Soloists offer Beethoven's Sextet in E-flat Major, Op. 81b in a pre-concert performance that begins at 6:15pm (included with all concert tickets).

On April 17, 18 & 20-in celebration of Easter-the TSO presents Mahler Resurrection Symphony, a colossal and heart-stirring work that addresses life-and-death issues as only Mahler can. Spanish guest conductor Juanjo Mena leads the combined forces of the TSO, the Amadeus Choir, the Elmer Iseler Singers, American soprano Joélle Harvey, and Canadian contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux.

On April 27 (2:00pm & 4:00pm), Montreal conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser is at the helm of the TSO for Let's Dance! As the musicians share the stage with dancers, this high-energy, interactive program features ballet, bhangra, and breakdancing that will have the whole family moving to the beat.

To reflect its commitment to accessibility and inclusion, the TSO is adding a special relaxed performance of Let's Dance on April 27 at 11:00am for families, to better meet the needs of patrons with autism spectrum disorders.
