It's 1965. Corie Bratter is a pre-feminist free spirit newly married to buttoned-down lawyer Paul Bratter. She's trying to make a home for them in their New York walk-up (walk way up!) apartment while expanding horizons that Paul wants to keep shut tight. Along the way, Corie's straight-laced widowed mother and the exotic bachelor neighbour find themselves also drawn into the couple's fray. This intimate examination of Corie's struggle to build a strong foundation for her new marriage in Neil Simon's longest-running play speaks faithfully to audiences of today.
The play features recent University of Toronto/Sheridan College graduates Sophia Fabiili as Corie Bratter and Ryan Fisher as Paul Bratter. They are accompanied by Amicus Alumnae Maureen Lukie as Mrs. Banks, Corie's Mother (Mrs. Bennett, Pride & Prejudice), Greg Nowlan as Victor Velasco (Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird ), and Michael Sherman as Telephone Repairman (Captain Brice, Arcadia).
This romantic comedy is directed by Jessica Beaulieu who is also a graduate of the University of Toronto where she studied film and theatre. Jessica is also the founder and Artistic Director of the Toronto based theatre company The Pheasant Plucker's Mates, and has directed numerous productions with them including the 2009 Toronto Fringe Festival hit Politically Correct Bedtime Stories, which was selected as the Patron's Pick and Best of the Fringe. In Jessica's own words, "Barefoot in the Park reminds us all that love is painful, exhausting, annoying, irrational, terrifying, predictable, unpredictable, spiteful, self-obsessive, temperamental, idiotic, humiliating, and always worth every minute."
Amicus is currently in its 32nd year of entertaining audiences and providing their members with the opportunity to share in the process of creating theatre. Volunteers are always welcome.
