Aluna Theatre will be presenting a New Festival of Theatre for Human Rights: Panamerican Routes / Rutas Panamericanas. From May 15-27, 2012 Aluna hosts intercultural and interdisciplinary theatre practitioners from the Latin American Diaspora.
The Mainstage Series connects Toronto to the Latin American Diaspora.
The first week features International Artists: Loco7 (from Bogotá via New York) brings stunning dance-theatre and larger-than-life puppetry to the stage with Urban Odyssey, while Violeta Luna (Mexico City via San Francisco) offers a more intimate border-crossing experience with Parting Memory.
Week two features Canadian artists with a reprise of Aluna Theatre's (Medellin via Toronto) award-winning Nohayquiensepa (No one knows), as well as the victorious return to Theatre Passe Muraille of Carmen Aguirre (Santiago via Vancouver) with Blue Box (produced by nightswimming), a lively glimpse into a revolutionary's life from the writer of Refugee Hotel.
The Backstage Series is the laboratory for ambitious new works in the early phase of their staging by some of Canada's most exciting new voices. This is an opportunity to peek in at the creation of tomorrow's blockbusters: grace by Rosa Laborde (the creator of Leo and Hush), The Intruder by Alameda Theatre's Amaranta Leyva, and a new work by Anishnabwe / French theatre artist Emilie Monnet in collaboration with artists from the Colombian Amazon, as well as a number of works-in-progress yet to be announced.
The Workshop Series brings international masters to lead classes in dance-theatre, puppetry, performance art and playwrighting with the Colombian Collective Creation approach.
A Conference on Performative Interventions in the Americas takes the stage in the final weekend, opening conversations among artists, activists, academics, and citizens about Theatre and Human Rights, hosted by professionals from a variety of backgrounds.
