Alumnae Theatre launches our 2015-2016 season with Antigone by Jean Anouilh, adapted by Lewis Galantiere, September 18-October 3, 2015. This provocative adaptation of the Sophocles tragedy presents a world of honor, treachery and fateful consequences. Jean Anouilh's modernized version uses the classic Greek tragedy Antigone to explore the disturbing moral dilemmas of our times.
Director Janet Kish has maintained the spirit and intellect of the play originally written for French audiences in 1944 and later translated for post-war Brits in 1949, while infusing it with energy suited to contemporary audiences. "I was drawn to this play because of the timelessness and universality of the themes and conflicts," Kish says. "Greece, Syria, Iraq, Israel, and the USSR are facing the same political and moral questions today as those written by Sophocles." Kish has created a Thebes in a parallel universe where the here and now is also the there and then. It is a meta-theatrical fusion of reality and fantasy: a play within a play within a play - where the gods both reenact and sit in judgement of Antigone and Creon.
This dark, underground, dangerous and disturbing world is brought to life by an extremely talented cast fully trained in both physical and classical theatre and a stellar design and artistic team that includes Teodoro Dragonieri (lead designer and scenographer), Kelsey Laine Jacobson (lighting design), Jeffrey Jones (composer and sound design), Sara Amadieh Rad (scenic painting and design), Jane Deluzio (Movement Director), Martina Christensen and Ana Komar (costume design).
We're offering a number of special event shows during the run. Saturday September 19th is a Social Media Friendly Performance in which audience members in the last three rows will be allowed to text and take photos (without flash). Sunday September 20th will feature a pre-show session at 12pm focusing on "Women of Courage". Three members of the show's design team - Teo Dragonieri, Ana Komar and Sara Ahmadieh Rad - are creating a lobby art installation based on the themes of that will be up for the run of the show.
