Alumnae Theatre Company's 99th season will close with Sarah Ruhl's Pulitzer Prize finalist play The Clean House, running April 7 - 22.
Directed by Ali Joy Richardson, The Clean House is beloved Tony-nominated playwright Sarah Ruhl at her best. After the unusual death of her parents, aspiring comedian Matilde moves from Brazil to Connecticut to clean the house of married doctors. When the husband falls in love with a patient, the household is thrown into a messy (and sometimes magical) whirlwind of hilarity and heartache. A finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, The Clean House is a fearlessly honest and wildly funny look at class, comedy and the nature of love.
"Ruhl has combined the fast-paced drama of telenovelas and the visual delight of magic realism with her own distinctly funny and poetic style. In rehearsal, we dissolve into laughter only to be choked-up by the very next line," says Director Ali Joy Richardson.
The Clean House is produced by Laura Jabalee Johnston and features Andrea Irwin, Lilia Leon, Marina Moreira, Neil Silcox, and Annemieke Wade. Alumnae's main stage will be transformed into the immaculate Connecticut house by set designer Orly Zebak and production manager/lighting designer Steph Raposo, in collaboration with stage manager Lizz Armstrong and assistant director NevAda Banks. Daina Valiulis and Helen Monroe return to Alumnae to design costumes and props, respectively. Nicholas Potter works his magic as sound designer and Sam Gaetz composes and coaches an original romantic duet for two of the characters.
