The 6th Annual TORONTO RUSSIAN FILM FESTIVAL (TRFF) is proud to announce this year's lineup focusing on the films of Alexey Serebryakov, returning to Innis Town Hall at the University of Toronto, this weekend, October 16-18, 2015.

Opening the Festival, on Friday, October 16 at 9:30pm, will be the Oscar and Palme d'Or-nominated film, Leviathan (2014), directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev. Starring Alexey Serebryakov in the role that catapulted him to international fame, the Golden Globe Award-winning film premiered at Cannes and also won for Best Screenplay at the Festival. The polarizing film is an UNCOMPROMISING retelling of the story of Job, but with a hard-working auto mechanic in Northern Russia battling a corrupt mayor who wants to take everything the man has. Twenty years since it first premiered in Russia, Hammer and Sickle is set in the 1930s and tells of a state-sponsored sex-change operation for a young peasant woman, in the centre of the Stalinist project. He becomes a model Soviet citizen but eventually realizes the artificiality of his position and tries to assert himself independent of the state.

The final film of TRFF, Cargo 200 (2007) directed by Aleksey Balabanov, is widely considered one of the most controversial films to come out of Russia. It is 1984 and the end of Soviet society. A daughter of a district communist leader disappears and a grim murder committed is in the outskirts of the same town. The same crooked cop is assigned to investigate both crimes in this gritty thriller.
