BWW Reviews: Hidden Room's DER BESTRAFTE BRUDERMORD Gives Austin a Comedic HAMLET…With Puppets! by Jeff Davis - January 27, 2014 To all at The Hidden Room, I hope you know that you've accomplished the impossible. You've made me like Hamlet. I know there are millions out there who consider Hamlet to be the greatest tragedy of all time, but I on the other hand consider the act of viewing Hamlet to be the real tragedy. Honestly, if I wanted to watch three hours of an unsympathetic, indecisive whiner hem and haw over decisions that will affect their entire country, I'd turn on C-SPAN and watch an entire Congress do their best imitation of Shakespeare's infamous Prince of Denmark. BWW Reviews: HAMLET Opens in Cincinnati by Kelly Thompson - January 17, 2014 The Cincinnati Shakespeare Company put on their production of Hamlet recently. Overall, it was a solid show and the acting was pretty good but I have to admit that there were elements that I didn't understand. Hamlet is a very long play yet there was only about a 20-30 minute period where I felt the time dragged by and that is an accomplishment in itself. Maynardville Open-Air Theatre Opens THE TRAGEDY OF KING RICHARD III Tonight by BWW News Desk - January 18, 2014 Artscape presents Shakespeare's, The Tragedy of King Richard III, a thrilling game of power and politics, at Maynardville Open-Air Theatre, for the first time in its history. Richard III dramatizes a key turning point in English history. Malicious, power hungry and bitter about his physical deformity, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, plots in secret as he manoeuvres his way to the throne - and decides to kill anyone he has to in order to become king. Deception and political manipulation abound in the history of his reign of terror and killing fields that caused the common and noble people of England to fear and loathe him. BWW Reviews: Seattle Shakes RICHARD II Lacks Highs and Lows by Jay Irwin - January 12, 2014 I've never particularly been a fan of Shakespeare's histories. To me they amount to a lot of political posturing. But even with all the posturing they usually amount to a story with high stakes for all involved. Unfortunately the pacing and some performances from Seattle Shakespeare Company's current production of "Richard II" are so middle of the road and one note that the show lacked those high stakes and amounted to just so much of that posturing. BWW Blog: Shakespeare as Sustenance in our Community by Guest Blogger: Dan McCleary - January 12, 2014 For those of us who spend much our days raising funds to produce live theatre, we are intimate with the competition for those funds from individuals, governments, foundations, and corporations. BWW Reviews: Synetic Theater's Jazz-Age TWELFTH NIGHT - A Manic, Slapstick Romp by Andrew White - January 11, 2014 Just when you were about to pack it in because of the miserable weather Synetic Theater has come up with a joyous, raucous celebration of love-and jazz-in its latest Shakespeare adaptation. Twelfth Night, perhaps the Bard's most beloved comedy, is realized here as a manic and slapstick-ridden romp through the Roaring Twenties. Featuring classic tunes from the early jazz era, director Paata Tsikurishvili has set the action in a silent-era Hollywood sound stage. His wife, Irina, heads a stellar cast that channels the best of 1920's screen comedians, to brilliant effect.
