BWW Review: Optimist Theatre Embraces Shakespeare and Its Audience
by Erin Lewenauer - August 26, 2016

You can feel fall. The breaking of a stick. The shattering of leaves. It's unusual to fall victim to this intense experience in the aggressively muggy, unending days of August in Milwaukee. And yet you'll feel this beginning with the first chord of Optimist Theatre's production of Shakespeare's tragedy Julius Caesar, performed 12 times over 3 weekends: August 4-7, 11-13, and 18-21. Free to the public, this marks the program's 7th season, held outdoors at the Selig-Joseph-Folz ampitheater in Alice Bertschy Kadish Park.

BWW Review: A True King Rises with KING LEAR at Elements Theatre
by Kristen Morale - August 17, 2016

The truth be told, I have neither read nor seen performed Shakespeare's King Lear, and was therefore as unfamiliar with the plot and its characters as basically anyone can possibly be; I suppose it wasn't mandatory reading when I went to school, for what reason I cannot possibly imagine. Although, I have always loved a good play or musical with traces of a tragic story at its core - a plot that is both trying on the actors and audience and therefore simply beautiful in how you are compelled to react to something with so much depth and significance. Having just seen King Lear at the Elements Theatre Company, not only was I introduced to a new theater in addition to a play I always wished to learn more about, but in such a way that created both a wonderful first impression of and precedent for this - nay, any - future Shakespearean production I plan to see. Even though this show is one of the more tragic ones you are ever bound to see, it really is a true king of a performance to behold.

BWW Review: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING Mixes Shakespeare's Classic Romantic Comedy with a Rockin' Song Score
by Shari Barrett - August 17, 2016

Director Gloria Gifford takes her job of inspiring upcoming stars in proper stage presentation, and above all, I must commend her for making sure each actor in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING at TU Studios understood exactly what they were saying so audience members could not only understand the words but also what was being said in terms of the dialogue's meaning. It is the first production of the play in which I could get the meaning of each line, even though the words as written were foreign to modern English. Some of the actors shared with me that Gloria demanded their line presentation and stage movements make perfect sense, and the actors responded with great care.

When David Greig and Gordon McIntyre's MIDSUMMER (A PLAY WITH SONGS) begins, and Helena (Rebecca Hart) and Bob (M. The ladies of CHICKSPEARE are back for another summer of Elizabethan improv, this year indoors in their new home at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood. It's been two years since I saw them perform on their lovely outdoor patio in Hollywood and I wondered how the experience would compare.
