On June 3, members of the Broadway community gathered at the Shubert Theatre of New Haven to celebrate excellence in high school musical theater at the second annual Stephen Sondheim Awards.

As one of the nation's leading professional theaters and recipient of the Regional Theatre Tony Award, Paper Mill Playhouse (Mark S. Hoebee-Producing Artistic Director, Michael Stotts-Managing Director) has a well-earned reputation for launching both performers and shows to Broadway. Since their inception in 1996, the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theatre have ignited the careers of many notable performers, all of whom attended high school in New Jersey. 

Dead & Company performed two sold out concerts at the Hollywood Bowl this week, following the band's 2019 Summer Tour opening concerts at Shoreline Amphitheatre in the Bay area.

The 10th annual KC SuperStar kicks into high gear on Monday night, June 3 at 7 p.m. as 20 area high school students* compete in the Semifinals in the coveted singing competition. The Semis will be held in the White Theatre of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, which sponsors the competition.

ABTKids: Schools will welcome 3,000 New York City public school students to a free performance at the Metropolitan Opera House on Friday, June 7 at 11:00 A.M. The hour-long, narrated program will feature American Ballet Theatre dancers in exciting excerpts from the Spring season repertoire, including scenes from Swan Lake, Le Corsaire and The Sleeping Beauty.

Two local students are on their way to New York City next month to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards - also known as the Jimmy Awards - representing Palm Beach County. The students will also experience a weeklong musical theater intensive with Broadway artists, thanks to being selected the top student performers at the second annual Kravis Center Dream Awards.

The Educational Theatre Foundation is pleased to announce that three California high schools damaged by last year's fires will receive grants to aid their recovery thanks to a grant funded by licensing agency Music Theatre International (MTI).

Two Utah high school performers are on their way to New York City after winning the award for Best Actress and Best Actor in the ninth annual Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards held in the Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City May 18. Abigail Edwards  from Green Canyon High School in North Logan won for her role as Belle in 'Beauty and the Beast' and Ethan Kelso from Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts won for his portrayal of Will Bloom in 'Big Fish.'

Steppenwolf Education and Drama Students at Lane Technical College Prep High School are proud to present a student-devised performance exploring the themes of racial prejudice and the erasure of communities of color, as brought to light through the Steppenwolf for Young Adults' (SYA) spring production of We are Proud to Present a Presentation.... Residency inspired by the creative inquiry question What If? and What would happen to stereotypes, racism, and body image if we learned who people truly were?

High school students, parents, friends, arts advocates, celebrities and city officials from all over Texas celebrated as winners and scholarship recipients were announced on Thursday, May 9, at the 8th Annual Dallas Summer Musicals High School Musical Theatre Awards (DSM HSMTA).

The Cape Cod Human Rights Commission recently hosted their Human Rights Academy for high school students, hosted at Cape Cod Academy. Students from 11 of the fourteen public and private high schools on Cape Cod participated. This year the keynote speaker was Hip-Hop Jazz artist, ZYG 808 who performed his song 'Insanity' and delivered a rousing keynote speech on the importance of leveling the social playing field to achieve effective human rights work by recognizing and eradicating the socially engrained elements of white supremacy in our society.

On May 20, three high school students from Fairfield and Westchester County will experience the joy of live theatre in a whole new way - as playwrights. Emilia Getzinger (of Botsford, CT), Grace O'Rourke (of Mamaroneck, NY) and Alexandra Levins (of Westport, CT) were named winners of The Palace Theatre's 2019 Ernie DiMattia Emerging Young Artist Awards for their writing of an original one-act play. All three will witness their voices and visions come to life with a staged reading by professional actors at The Palace in Stamford.

Kenny Leon's True Colors Theatre Company and Jujamcyn Theatres announce the winners for the 11th Annual August Wilson Monologue Competition National Finals, held on Monday, May 6th at the August Wilson Theatre in New York. The first-place winner was Trajan Clayton from Perry, GA; second-place, Katara Willis from Buffalo, NY; and third place, Abad Viquez from Chicago, IL.
