The production ran for 129 performances at the American Airlines Theatre. The story deals with labor troubles in a pajama factory, where workers' demands for a seven-and-a-half cent raise are going unheeded. In the midst of this ordeal, love blossoms between Babe, the grievance committee head, and Sid, the new factory superintendent. Broadway Rewind: Watch Scenes from HIGH, with Kathleen Turner by Nicole Rosky - May 16, 2020 Today we rewind to 2011, when Matthew Lombardo's High premiered on Broadway, starring Evan Jonigkeit, Stephen Kunken and Kathleen Turner. The show played for only 7 performances at the Booth Theatre. The story revolves around a nun, Sister Jamison Connelly, who deals with her sordid past and the people around her with her acerbic wit and wisdom. Starring Cheyenne Jackson, Kate Baldwin, Christopher Fitzgerald, Jim Norton and Chuck Cooper, the musical transferred to Broadway following an Encores! production earlier that year. In Finian's Rainbow, An elderly Irishman, Finian, moves to the southern United States with his daughter Sharon, to bury a stolen pot of gold near Fort Knox, in the mistaken belief that it will grow. Og, a leprechaun, follows them, desperate to recover his treasure before the loss of it turns him permanently human. BWW Rewind: Watch Songs from Laura Benanti's Broadway Debut in THE SOUND OF MUSIC! by Nicole Rosky - April 27, 2020 Today we rewind to 1999, when Laura Benanti took over the role of Maria from Rebecca Luker in The Sound of Music. Benanti, who made her Broadway debut the previous year as Luker's understudy, was 19 years old. The revival ran for over a year at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre), where it opened in March 1998. It starred Alexander Gemignani, Aaron Lazar, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Gary Beach and Norm Lewis. Mackintosh told Ridge, 'I'm delighted to have the opportunity. The only thing I never expected or dreamt of was getting such a wonderful cast as this. Everybody we ever dreamt of wanted to be in it. We found some marvelously talented people that we didn't know, and I think it's one of the strongest casts of Les Miz that's ever been anywhere.' Broadway Rewind: A CATERED AFFAIR Walks Down the Aisle to Broadway by Nicole Rosky - April 28, 2020 This episode of Broadway Rewind has BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge dropping by Kleinfeld Bridal to meet the cast of one of Ridge's favorite musicals, A Catered Affair, which featured a book by Harvey Fierstein and a beautiful score by John Bucchino. The musical welcomed back to Broadway Faith Prince and Harvey Fierstein, and the guests were treated to a number from the show by co-stars Leslie Kritzer and Matt Cavanaugh. Fierstein told Ridge, 'The whole experience has been joyful. You bring in these actors who have so easily taken over these roles. Between you and me, you know when you have a show that has a breakout performance, it's unbelievable. We've got three in the show. You've got Faith Prince, who is playing a role she was born to play. No one has seen her do anything like this. Tom Wopat, who has never created a role on Broadway, he has only done revivals, so you are going to see Tom do something he has never done before. Then, Leslie Kritzer, everyone thinks of her as the funny girl, who stole Legally Blonde, and she is just heartbreaking in this.' We also drop by the CD recording of the hit musical Xanadu, where Cheyenne Jackson told Ridge, 'Xanadu lifts you up. It's 90 minutes but you are onstage the entire time. I'm loving it.' Broadway Rewind: ROAD SHOW Bounces Its Way to the Public Theater! by Nicole Rosky - May 5, 2020 With Stephen Sondheim celebrating his 90th birthday, this episode of Broadway Rewind is very special for BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge because it us to the opening night of the Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman tuner Road Show at The Public Theater. It was directed and designed by John Doyle and starred Michael Cerveris and Alexander Gemignani. Cerveris told Ridge about this new version of the material, 'I saw Bounce in Washington so that was my first exposure to the material, but this really isn't a reexamination of that source material, it's an entirely new musical. So, when I saw the new draft that Stephen and John had done, it was really exciting.' Broadway Rewind: THE WEDDING SINGER Says 'I Do' on Broadway! by Nicole Rosky - May 10, 2020 But first, the episode starts off with a look at The Wedding Singer, based on the popular Adam Sandler film. It starred newcomer Stephen Lynch and joining him in the role of Julie, the waitress with a heart of gold, was one Broadway's loveliest leading ladies, Laura Benanti. The musical features a score by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin and a book by Begluin and Tim Herlihy. Rounding out the cast was Kevin Cahoon, Matthew Saldivar, Amy Spanger, Rita Gardner, Felicia Finley and Richard H. Blake. Benanti told Ridge, 'I'm really proud of it. It's nice to play the girl next door. I have never done that. This is really my first brand new Broadway musical. So, I have learned a lot.' Broadway Rewind: Watch Chazz Palminteri in Scenes from A BRONX TALE on Broadway! by Nicole Rosky - April 18, 2020 Today we rewind to 2007, when Chazz Palminteri's autobiographical one-man show A Bronx Tale came to Broadway. It tells the coming-of-age story of Calogero Anello, a young New Yorker torn between the temptations of organized crime and the values of his hardworking father. It originally premiered in Los Angeles in the 1980s, before moving Off-Broadway. After a film version involving Palminteri and Robert DeNiro was released in 1993, a musical version of the story opened on Broadway in 2016. Broadway Rewind: Watch Lea Salonga Take Over Fantine in 2007 by Nicole Rosky - April 13, 2020 Today we rewind to 2007, when Lea Salonga joined the company of the first revival of Les Miserables. Salonga, who famously portrayed Eponine in the original production, took on Fantine- previously played by Daphne Rubin-Vega. She would go on to play the role in the 2010 in the 25th Anniversary Concert of the show. Broadway Rewind: Watch Full Scenes from LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES with Laura Linney! by Nicole Rosky - April 8, 2020 Today we rewind to 2008 for the two-month Broadway run of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, starring Laura Linney, Ben Daniels, Kristine Nielsen, Mamie Gummer and Benjamin Walker. Adapted from the 1782 novel of the same title by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, the play focuses on the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, rivals who use sex as a weapon of humiliation and degradation, all the while enjoying their cruel games. Their targets are the virtuous (and married) Madame de Tourvel and Cécile de Volanges, a young girl who has fallen in love with her music tutor, the Chevalier Danceny. In order to gain their trust, Merteuil and Valmont pretend to help the secret lovers so they can use them later in their own treacherous schemes. Broadway Rewind: Watch Full Scenes from LOVEMUSIK on Broadway! by Nicole Rosky - April 11, 2020 Today we rewind with LoveMusik, a musical which ran on Broadway for just over a month in 2007. LoveMusik is a musical written by Alfred Uhry, using a selection of music by Kurt Weill. The story explores the romance and lives of Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya, based on Speak Low (When You Speak Love): The Letters of Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya. Uhry and Prince worked on LoveMusik for four years to develop it into a stage work. The story spans over 25 years, from the first meeting of Lenya and Weill as struggling young artists, to their popularity in Europe and America, to Weill's death from a heart attack at age 50. The Broadway production ran at the Biltmore Theatre (now the Samuel J. Friedman), starring Michael Cerveris and Donna Murphy. Broadway Rewind: Watch Full Scenes from THE 39 STEPS on Broadway! by Nicole Rosky - April 15, 2020 Today we rewind with original footage from The 39 Steps, which ran on Broadway for almost two years from 2008-2010. The 39 Steps is a parody adapted from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock. The play's concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 adventure film The 39 Steps to be performed with a cast of only four. One actor plays the hero, Richard Hannay, an actress (or sometimes actor) plays the three women with whom he has romantic entanglements, and two other actors play every other character in the show: heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object. The original Broadway cast featured Charles Edwards, Jennifer Ferrin, Arnie Burton and Cliff Saunders Broadway Rewind: MARY POPPINS is Practically Perfect in 2006! by Nicole Rosky - April 19, 2020 This episode of Broadway Rewind is a look at Disney's Mary Poppins and a behind the scenes look at director John Doyle's production of the Stephen Sondheim and George Furth musical Company, which welcomed back to Broadway Raul Esparza as Bobby. Raul told BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge, 'The show is a groundbreaking piece of musical theatre, that is a masterpiece. I've seen many, many productions of it, and I've enjoyed them all, but I never knew, that it was this good and I feel like it was just written.'
